"When he woke up, the elephant was still there. Elephant is the shortest possible film. Elephant consists of a single frame, with a duration of 1/60 of a second (16.7 milliseconds). Elephant is the demonstration of the essential difference between photography and film, of the radical difference between frame and photograph: film is not movement (it is impossible to reproduce movement with a single frame), but visual time. Elephant imposes its (meagre) temporality, both showing and concealing. Elephant is political cinema, a denunciation of the brutality of a fascist state (illegalisation of political parties, imprisonment of journalists) whose obviousness to want to deny the whole world, a denunciation of the censorship and manipulation of the media that only show what the masters of the world allow them to show." Body, emotions and mind are eternally mutant wastelands, altered by the rake and hoe of every bond created. A trace of earth and water in soil, skin and fabric. The hoe, the rake, the bucket of water, break, caress, wet, erode this non-place inhabited by two passers-by who wander and meet. It is a study of space, of the 'I' through the traces we leave in it. Francis Wolff, ""Why Music? 2021, p 49 There is a special relationship between sound and event. For there to be sound, something has to happen, something has to move, an event has to occur. Without movement there is no sound. Sounds signify events. For the creation of this piece I impregnated the left hand of the tambourine player with black oil paint so that, as she played the different rhythms in sequence that give the piece its name, she would leave the imprint of each beat on the tambourine drumhead. The performance was recorded on a single-channel video. In an attempt to generate new forms of visual recording of these sounds belonging to tradition, a monochrome pictorial piece is produced as a consequence of the performative process on the instrument itself and, at the same time, a video piece (which shows in real time the performance with the tambourine) without sound, which means that we cannot hear, but have to intuit or visually deduce the rhythms mentioned in the title. Thus, this piece, made with black paint, which denies any three-dimensionality and which refers us to the colour of traditional notation in music, is an attempt to legitimise new ways of confronting and recording certain events derived from the musical and pictorial traditions, and speaks to us of the obstinate and uninterrupted attempt to create new codes of understanding between the visual and the sonorous. #soundthought, an exercise in writing without ink, carried out using an old quill on golden sheets of silk paper. It is an attempt to record thought through the recording of the sound generated by the act of calligraphing words resulting from the flow of consciousness through automatic writing. This gesture, which implies the intention of absence of control of reason, on the other hand invites the audience to an active listening. The sound generated will be captured through the use of a contact microphone, to be subsequently used as plastic compositional material in the work. To inscribe the ephemeral, the artist recovers the manual through the manuscript, manipulates and edits it digitally to finally deposit it in an analogue storage medium of sound signals. This potentially infinite action translates into a testimony that can be looked at and listened to without being read. Notes of traced traces that materialise by tearing and crossing out innumerable fragmented and crossed phrases. Reminiscences interrupted, superimposed, wounded, confused and half-forgotten. Broken memories, capable of generating quick instants that slow down time in the frustrated attempt to make the intangible tangible, like an unmarked blow. Sound thought is also a category of psychiatry used to talk about auditory hallucinations. [ × ]
