Video-Nou was a group created as a result of the Jornadas de Vídeo organized by the CAIC (Buenos Aires), which took place in early 1977 at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona. The members of the group, made up in part by former students of the CIPLA course at the Barcelona Theater Institute, came from the fields of journalism, sociology, education, photography, architecture, art and design – later they added others from urbanism, antipsychiatry and the performing arts. We explore the various fields of application of video: social, artistic, documentary, educational and professional. The Video-Nou activity was focused on the practice of horizontal, bidirectional and participatory communication, in the field of what was then known as «sociocultural animation»: in our case, producing videos made with the direct participation of our own stakeholders that are immediately disseminated in their specific context and which they called “video intervention.”
At the beginning of 1979, Video-Nou became the managing team of the Servei de Vídeo Comunitari, conceived with the intention of public service, in March 1979 it organized the first Jornadas de Vídeo Comunitario at the College of Architects of Catalonia, and began its activities with the support of the Theater Institute in July 1979, first as a non-profit Civil Society and later as a Cooperative, an experience that lasted until 1983. The main objective of the Servei de Vídeo Comunitari was to disseminate and promote the use of video as means of communication and social, cultural, educational and informative dynamization of community life. More than three hundred people were trained, information and distribution contacts were maintained with the international network of centers dedicated to decentralized and horizontal communication, and we also critically contributed to the expansion of local video and television.
For six years (1977-1983) the group participated in the historical events that took place in Catalonia and Spain: political “transition”, urban social movements and struggles, and cultural and technological changes.
The Video-Nou / Servei de Video Comunitari archive has been recovered (with a part already restored) thanks to the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and as a result of the exhibition Desacuerdos (2005).
